Baseball Related

I know that everyone knows this. ESPN needs to pay more attention to the rest of the league. And this is coming from a Yankees fan. While in the tavern last night, I remarked to Chopper that they have been playing the same shots of the Yankee v Red Sox game without spending time with their other big league brethren. That is fucking lame. I say again that is fucking lame. LA spends a lot of money and are good. But we are the four letter network. We only care about 2 teams. The game on Sunday night is cool as again I am a Yankee fan, but taking 2 hours of my time on the two teams before hand is once again fucking lame.

How about that rant for F-Bombs. Anger is good.

Enough. Lets look at the team that really matters... Your Milwaukee Brewers almost swept Houston for the first time today. Without Neddy Bear, there really isnt anything to bitch about...be honest. But here are some notes to think about.

Manny Parra is a headcase. Not along the same line as Milton Bradley, as Parra is not an asshole. He just tries to be too cute with his pitches. He could get through the opposing lineup twice with a fastball alone but tries to throw too many pitches on the corners. He needs to start to have confidence in his stuff. IE, become a pitcher and not a thrower.

Mike Cameron is having a decent season so far. And he his not striking out...as much. Off topic-the team is not striking out as much. Is this the result of the hitting coach? He was not a good major league hitter. Anyway...He is taking pitches, hitting dingers, and playing the center field that he is paid, albeit too much, for.

Jeff Suppan despite 2 decent starts is still a bum. Enough said.

Dave Bush seems to be benefiting from a beard. Though he most likely will taper off of his torrid pace as a stater, it is good to have him around. A dude I work with will give me shit about saying that tomorrow. Bush and Looper have become the de-facto aces of the staff, and as long as Yovani and these two keep it up, good things will happen.

I could go on, but this is all my hungover mind can do right now. Ryan Braun is starting to find it, and the offense knows it. They probably will not make the playoffs but they will give the Cubs and the Cardinals a run. The thing is, it is early. Ask me again at the end of May and I will probably tell you different.

T squared, for the first time, did not ass-fuck the team this year in the draft. Sure he gave up some picks, but when was the last time he traded up. Two words. Fucking Never. Moving to the 34 defense requires specific players. It is not difficult to play, in fact it may be easier that the 43, if you have the right players. Better to take 2 defensive players rather than 1 offensive one. Unofficial off the record guess...10-6 and a loss on the first round. But at least it is better than last season.

Try Lowering Ticket Prices

I came across this one this evening. Here are a few tips I thought of that may help...

The National Basketball Association will borrow 175 million dollars to serve as aid to teams that might struggle

1) As the title suggests, lower ticket prices. Right now, I can find the money that represents a pretty large part of the dollars coming in to these NBA teams. Fourth level tickets to a Boston v. OKC(the worst team in the league), at Boston, are about $77.00. Thats the fourth level. the nose bleed seats as they say. "But wait edgrimly, these are tickets for a premier team." That is correct. How about a match between OKC and Sacramento(another one of the bad teams.) $68.50 in OKC. That is again level 4. Try taking your family of 4 to these games, what with food and all, its a pretty big deal.

2) Stop paying millions of dollars to 18 year old children. Sure all of that money at the clubs is "stimulating" the economy. This is what rookies got paid in ought 7. Its probably more now. Paying a kid out of high school that much money is wrong on so many levels. But we're doing our best to talk the economy of the game here. Granted, in the NBA, rookies can make or break a team. See LeBron. But for one of these first 15 teams that are borrowing money, does it make sense? Granted, these salaries by no means are larger than MLB, but at least baseball has had a resurgence in the past couple of years thanks to steroids.

3) Take a tip from NCAA and play real basketball. There are a couple of teams that I could name that play real team basketball, and have for the last few years. San Antonio. And Detroit when they were good. Sure, coaches in college make a bunch of money, but they also bring it in to the school. They force their players to play defense, long lost on most NBA coaches, and do much more with much less talent. It may be hard to understand, but basketball is a team sport. Once again lost on most NBA coaches. See AI. Throwing up 30 shots per game is not playing with a team in mind.

Like it or not, this was bound to happen. Football does decent, and their ticket prices are pretty high as well. Baseball has been doing OK, despite AROD and the juice. Shit, even the NHL is making changes to get more money and stay in the black. Like it or not, you had to see something like this coming. You cant fund a national franchise on fancy commercials and shitty product alone. When some players are telling the media that they will go play in Europe for more money, you have issues. The point is, I would like to be a fan. I have been to one NFL game and numerous MLB games. I would like to watch the NBA on TV and not get pissed. But the fact is I do. Too much money and not enough product make it not affordable.

So, the golden god of the frozen tundra has made it to yet another pro-bowl. Look, its not that I dislike the guy. He is more than likely one of the top three QBs of all time. And it pains me to keep harping on it. But I have no choice, since pitchers and catchers dont report for like two months. Look at some numbers.

As an aside, since the national media votes for this useless and unwatched game, obviously the one that they have been rubbing off behind our collective backs for years is going to win.

Here is the point. Do numbers matter anymore? If they did, B would be the easy choice. Look at it people. More TDs, less INTs(and I should leave it at that), more yards, and a better rating. Digression, I will never understand QB rating. But lo and behold, arguably the worse of the three, gets the W. Granted, no one cares about the pro-bowl, but can these guys even look at it? Statistics? They are the measure of how things happen right? Who made things happen better? I can think of one NFC QB who did...But we are talking AFC here.

Look, the guy started more games than anyone ever. He holds basically every record in the book. He just plays for another team. I dont hate him for leaving. Really, I dont hate anyone. And both sides of the equation were assholes in the end. I get it. I really do. For fucks sake this guy made me watch football again!! But do we, as fans of Sconi' sports in general really have to accept this? These people who voted for this seem like they dont even pay attention, as its not like the God of the Frozen Tundra is going to go to the game anyway. How many has he missed? Dont know, and am to lazy to look it up. But it is a couple, and those were his golden years.

Anyway, back to the point. I am a fan of Noodles. He is great, and in my mind the greatest. But if this is about performance on the field, he is the loser this time around. Numbers do not lie people. In three years, if he actually retires, this will be an afterthought. And in 8 years when he in in the pantheon of great QBs, it will be even more so. But why now? Sooner or later, the hacks that write columns for pro sports will need to pay attention to fact. That fact lies in numbers, not the winks that so and so gets in the press conference.

Lots of people these days are really quick to blame the loss of one noodle-armed retiree on the woes of your Green Bay Packers this year. Lets look at the numbers.

More yards and TDs. Less interceptions as well. Oh, I forgot that the best QB in the history of the game has that record as well.

Make no mistake. I think that Noodles is the best that ever was, at least for the time being. The numbers speak for themselves. I will gladly take those INTs with that many starts. But anyone who blames a shitty season on his loss is an idiot. In the 13-3 season, Green Bay won 9 of the 13 against teams with a below .500 record at the time. This year, they have played and lost against teams with an above .500 record a lot. Not to mention that the defense leaks like a crappy shower head. Early on, the secondary was lights out, but they have begun to look old and tired. See Woodson and Harris. On top of that, AJ Hawk looks like a slow idiot because outside of Kampman, the D line is shitty.

Solution? A Rodg is a good QB. Anyone who tells you different is also an idiot. But the offense is not the problem. Tell the sizzler that he needs someone good on the D line, and maybe 2 people who are good on the D line. I hear that this year is a bad year for the linemen in the draft Teddy boy. That would make the LBs play like they are actual football players, instead of the 2nd string of Green Bay Prebble High School. Add to that a secondary who can tackle without breaking a hip, and there is your winner.

My point is this. All of you people who blame the shitty season on Thompson are correct. Crazy cap room and no real free agents is clinically insane. But...all of you who blame the shitty season on Brett Favre are not at all smart. The schedule and injuries play a part sure, but if you dont have a defense you dont win games. The golden god of the frozen tundra does not play defense, though he does throw a mean block at times.

Notes on a New Regime

Nothing much out of here. 18/22 for 178 and a TD. Not bad, considering the MN defense is bad ass, what with the 500 million dollars to the end, Allen, that Kornheiser kept harping on. Wait, didnt he also give the big city sneak for a TD? Not bad...but a game does not a season make. You have to believe that a 1-0 start makes this kid feel OK about all of the assholes out there. Yeah he had a fumble, but that was Spitz's fault since he has not played that position all that much. In the end, a W is a W. THe defense may have not looked all that great, but Kampman is an animal. Good game young padawan learner. Good game.

Also, Bushy went almost 7 and the Brewers are up 4-2. Nice getting out of that bases loaded jam. I still think you are shitty.

So today, the NFL Commish met with a senator, Arlen Specter (r-Penn) to discuss the recent "spy-gate" scandal, as well as taping a walk through of their opponent prior to the Super...I mean Big Game, I dont want to get prosecuted, in 2002. First of all, why is "gate" added to high level controversies? You dont hear Chopper calling his divorce "divorce-gate." Or Muntaba calling his love affair with his first computer "computer-gate." But I digress...Is there really a point? Does Congress really have the time to waste sticking it's money grubbing finger into one of the most profitable, transparent industries that this great country has ever had? What with a war, stimulating the economy, skyrocketing gasoline prices, and the recent revelation that Brittany Spears is a horrible mother, to me, it is the same as questioning the Rocket, and the realization that Sammy Sosa couldnt speak English. Even the lame ass Mitchell Report was a waste of Govt. money as far as I'm concerned. The point is, who cares. Even if the Patriots cheated, on multiple occasions...allegedly, why does the legislative branch have to investigate? Does it not stand to reason that this money making entity called "American Football" can police itself? They have people who are responsible for making sure that this kind of stuff is taken care of, internally. Look at the Vickster. He may never play football again, and will have to pay back his money like Rickie Williams. Holy crap, there is another example. For goodness sake, they even handle steroid allegations internally.

Although the NBA is dead to some people I know, I have to point out the thing that makes me angry about this article. Apparently, the current coach of the Marquette HS basketball team...I mean Milwaukee Bucks, said this...

How many guys who have started consistently in the last 10 years deserve that spot...cough...Tim Duncan... Maybe it is because in basketball as much as in baseball, you have to ride out the guy who is playing the best? Accepting the small sample size as well as basketball being a shell of its former self, why do coaches not get that? Now, for those of you nit- pickers, I am not advocating leaving in Turnblow when there are 2 runners on...simply to say that you can tell when a guy is on a streak and when he is off of it.

So I talked to my Dad tonight because he is going to take the family to see "A Christmas Carol" at the Pabst on Sunday for my little brother's birthday. We talked about how many deer he shot, and if I get some deer meat or not. Than he said to me "Packer fever hey?" I said that I would most likely fall asleep before the end of the first half. He responds by saying, and I quote, "That Favre will sure mess it up, wont he?" "I will probably shut it off because I am disgusted before the end of the first half." He went on to give the first football prediction he has ever given to me. Dallas 35, Green Bay 21. 4 INTs. That my friends, is fantastic. So good in fact that it gets two tags.

Call me a Traditionalist

I may be crazy.......I dont like the designated hitter. Dont like the intentional walk with no one on base. And wasting outs is lame in almost any situation. I think that human error has played an important part of my National Pastime since the Boston Beaneaters to the Big Red Machine and on up to today. That is why this makes me a bit angry.

The proposal, approved by a 25-5 vote, was limited to boundary calls -- whether potential home runs are fair or foul, whether balls go over fences or hit the tops and bounce back, and whether fans interfere with possible homers.

According to that Bartman guy, Umpires can still tell if a fan interferes. And you rarely see the other calls overturned, despite the antics of some coaches. And the last time I saw anything like it, even if the Umps get the home run calls wrong, over 4000+ regular season games, it will even out. That is what makes the game great. It is a game of true averages. Now I'm not saying that the officials get the calls right all the time, and I have seen some pretty blatant bad calls. But removing that small, arbitrary, human element violates all that is true about the game, and society as a whole. We all make mistakes. Look at Choppers 2nd wife, the worse of the 5.

Television replays can be used for many calls in the NFL. In the NBA, they are often used to determine whether players get shots off before time expires. In the NHL, replays are applied to check whether pucks cross goal lines. In grand slam tennis, replays can be used to ascertain whether balls are in or out.

Obviously, this would only increase the length of the games. And some of those lame ass AL games already top out over 4 hours. Second, why make this like all of the rest of the major sports? The NBA is already fixed, so thats no big deal. In football, what is the percentage of successful challenges? 50/50 maybe? If the NFL jumped off of a bridge, would you follow it? And who really cares about the NHL anyway?

Isnt this part of why we love the game? Seeing some boneheaded manager who thinks he can sway the Umpire when he goes nuts, or knowing that Bobby Cox holds the all time record for ejections makes the game fun. If we do away with that, what is to prevent it from progressing to balls and strikes? See the beginning of this paragraph, as well as the first linked video. And if thats the case, why not take them out entirely....Then who would we hate all summer long?
